First Aid Course and Harry Potter Maraton
10/03/12 11:45
Well better late than never,
Last weekend I was course leader on a first aid course and a Defibrillator course, It was a lot of fun, and everybody really wanted to learn as much as possible. But there was a lot to go trough so I think we where all a little tired in the end…. And of course the Katie t-shirt was with me

And then we had a freaking 18 hour long Harry Potter Marathon, but it was awesome.

Sorry for not posting in a while, it`s been hectic with work and school. But last weekend me and a group of friends from the scouts went skiing in the mountains, and it was great. We had a lot of fun and it was so good to feel the snow again. I also made a podcast trailer of the trip, check it out! Follow the link under the picture our just click on the picture. First aid course

This weekend (20-22 of January) I was in the capital to be an instructor on a first aid course. This was a course designed for the leaders and rangers of the KFUK-KFUM scouts and the NSF Scouts. It was a great weekend and we had lots of fun. I am really to tired to write much about it, but here are some pictures.

Poster boy
17/01/12 12:32
Well today I flipped trough the University of Stavanger`s catalog and found a big picture of my self as a poster boy for nursing. This was something I did not expect, but I see it`s the same picture as when they did the magazine thing for acute training. Well a little fun. I guess I should do the whole “proud to be a nurse thing” hehe.

4 years since Aconcagua summit
15/01/12 00:50
4 years ago in this date (14.01.08) I summmited Aconcagua 6962m.o.h. At that time people are not climbing in the himalayas so we where the highest people in the world. Oh what a feeling it was great.
I spent today working but I did look at one of the old news paper articles, check it out here
Also after this episode I appeared on tv, check the news thing under or by using this link
It`s strange to look back so much have happened since this, a lot can happen in 4 years. Take a look at my podcast called “my last 5 years”

Today I had this thing were all of us who went on exchange had to tell the second year students about it. I solved this by talking a lot, showing some funny pictures “like this one”

Then I showed a little movie showing some of the highlights from my trip to Australia. You can watch this movie by following the podcast link under, and remember you can subscribe on iTunes as well.

Back to School
11/01/12 23:29
It`s strange to be back to the “normal” life. Both School and work have started again. I am now going into my last term in my bachelor of nursing at the university of Stavanger. It`s going to be great to be finished and get my Nursing License (RN). I am also working a lot at the moment to save up some money for new projects, but I love my job so it`s ok.
Well tomorrow I have to do a presentation about the exchange to Australia, I wonder if it will be possible to explain how great it was, at least I will try.
Oh and the other day a package I sent my self from Australia arrived, great to have some of my stuff back. And some of the great books I got down there.

In other news I learned a new great motto “be safe at night sleep with a nurse”

Back on the "wall"

Some days ago I took my Niece and my two Nephews on a small trip up this one mountain close the where I live. The goal was to do this 50m repel/absail just for fun. My smallest nephew had not done a long absail jet, so we thought it was time to do it
It was a great day and we had a lot of fun, I got a new challenge when I had to absail with the dog, but it went really well.

You can see the wall, where the straight blank face is.

Home Sweet home
25/12/11 19:42
Well I am back home.
First of all sorry to all of you who thought I would stay in Australia until the 4 of January, I had to keep it secret. I showed up unexpected at my mother and fathers house on the 21 of December. I think I almost gave my mother a hearth attack. Then I went to my sister, brother in law and 3 of my nieces and nephews and It was so good to see them. And I think they where really happy to see me
I celebrated christmas eve with my sister and her family and I loved it, we had so much fun, I think we spent the most of the evening laughing. It really is lovely to be back home but I will miss Australia and the great people I met there. You will always be welcome in Norway!

Today I started the day by checking out the queen victoria market, it was full of life and people selling a lot of cool and different stuff. I had to walk across town to get there, so since I had already walked that far, I decided to walk a bit further and check the Melbourne museum, it turned out to be great, they had a mind and body exhibition that I really liked. They also had a life and evolution exhibition that also was fun.

After that I ended the evening by watching a movie at the IMAX cinema. a 23m high and 35m wide screen.

Sky deck 88
17/12/11 23:57
It raining so I think it`s a good time to update the blog.
Yesterday we checked out the aquarium, I have never been in one, so I think this was a good time to do it. It was pretty cool, they had sharks and other nice fish, turtles etc. I am not a big fan of animals in cages etc, but it was nice to finally see how a big aquarium is. After this we walked up collins street to find coffee (and I had a cookie).
In the evening we went out for dinner at a nice restaurant. I had a nice steak this time
When it got dark it was time to check out the Sky deck 88. Which apparently now is the highest building in the southern hemisphere, I though that was the sky tower in Auckland but it`s not. So now I have finally been in the highest.
The sky deck was really fun at night, you had an amazing view over the city, and you could see the lights go on for ever.

View from the sky deck 88.

Philip Island and Penguins
17/12/11 00:16
Yesterday was great ! We started the day by checking out this huge bat colony right outside the city. There we hundreds and hundreds of bats hanging in the trees, it was really cool and absolutely worth the trip out there.

The Bat Colony

All those dark spots are bats
We then went to a park where you could get up and close with some Australian native animals, this was really nice to get to see how they look in up close and to interact with them. In general I am a little against these parks, but this was run really good, and had big open areas for the animals.

Me talking to the kangaroo

A little peacock
After that we went over to Philip Island to check out the world smallest penguin, the Australian penguin. We walked around on the Island looking into small holes (from a distant) to see the small penguins inside. When the sun started to go down we went to the ocean to see all the grown up penguins come up to feed their children. This means that they have to walk across the beach and into the small bush to find their small holes in the ground. When they are no more the 30cm in length with 6cm long legs, this looks a little funny. They “run” over the beach to end up really tired when they get to the bush, and there they rest for a while.

Philip Island

Philip Island

Penguin Babies
This trip took all day, but we also got to check out some other beaches and a swan lake etc. We started at 10:00am and where not back before 12:00pm. It was a long but great day.

All of us
oh and let`s not forget the Sea lion !

Family reunion in Melbourne
15/12/11 13:16
It`s been a couple of really good days.
On Wednesday the 14 Sabines mother and middle sister arrived in Melbourne and met up with us. We then changed hostel so that we all live at the same place. It was great for Sabine to meet them again, and it was fun for me to meet these people I have heard so much about. Even though they had a little jet-lag when they got here, we tried to get a lot into the day.
We took the free city tram to the dock and waterfront, just to check that place out, and have a ice cream
I had to flavors one with licorice and one with bubble gum, apparently this was a big deal and they all made fun of my ice cream. Not really nice if you ask me. But I still enjoyed it!

In the evening we all went out to eat at a nice italian restaurant, it was really nice to get to eat out again, and not having to make the food in a hostel.
Today we have been a little bit like tourist, (I am sorry about that) we went to the Melbourne Zoo, it is the oldest Zoo in Australia and one of the oldest in the world. It`s actually 140 years old. It turned out to be a nice zoo, but pretty much like all zoo`s. One of the highlights was that they sold cotton candy. They also had a butterfly house that you could walk true, something I found a little nice, since I have never done that before. You can check out the zoo at http://www.zoo.org.au/MelbourneZoo

The we went to ST Kilda, and checked out a big shopping stress, before going to a marked at the waterfront, and then walking along the beach. This turned out to be one of my favorite places in Melbourne, it`s a little more quite and like you know I love being able to see the Ocean (Mountains would be the best though).

Then we ended the evening with a coffee at the South bank.

Melbourne has to be one of the greatest cites in Australia! We spent the day walking around the city center, and the south bank. Some of the things we checked out was the town hall, the state library of victoria, city square and St Paul`s cathedral. The library really impressed me, it was huge and the interior was beautiful. We also checked out Queen victoria marked, which was huge, and you could find anything in here.
The Cathedral was also really nice and I liked how you could almost walk anywhere in it.
Tomorrow we are meeting Sabin`s sister and Mother and they will be joining us for the next days, we are also switching to another hostel, so that we all can live at the same place.

Melbourne "one big city"
12/12/11 11:50
We have arrived Melbourne!
After 11 hours on the Overland we arrived Melbourne at 19:00 this evening. Our first impression of the city is great. We walked around on some of the main streets and it looks really nice and friendly. A big highlight is also that i saw a man dressed as a penguin playing a bagpipe (not joking) I found that quite funny, don’t you ?
Other than that I can tell you that our hostel is nice but a little to big for my taste. Currently staying at the hotel discovery (which is a hostel, even though the name suggest otherwise) But it`s ok. We are staying here 2 night before we are switching to the hostel urban or something like that.
We don’t have any big plans for Melbourne yet, but it looks like we will have fun.

Swimming with Dolphins
11/12/11 03:42
Today we went swimming with wild dolphins in Australia. We went out with a sailboat and then when there was dolphins in the water, we swam in the water quiet and looked at the dolphins as they swam pas us. It was a great experience. I really liked that there was no chasing the dolphins, no feeding and no touching. It was only watching them as they swam past or around us. They are truly some special animals and they look so nice under the water.

Some of the Dolphins we saw
There is this awesome company that takes you out sailing so you can go swimming with the dolphins, they are called Temptation and you check them out at www.dolphinboat.com.au They do a great job. It`s also good to know that they have an marine biologist on board that is there to protect and watch the dolphins, so they really have respect for the animal life.

A couple of Dolphins
I also got to play some more nurse today, one of the passengers one the boat panicked in the water, and started hyperventilating leading to loss of conciseness. I stepped in and helped the boat crew, and stayed with the person. It all went well without any big problems but I guess it looked really dramatic since the drama started in the water. But the main thing is that it all turned out good.
After the boat trip we went and had fish and chips at the dock, which always is good. The rest of the day I think we will relax and organize for our train trip to Melbourne tomorrow. We are taking the Overland a 10 hour train to Melbourne.

It´s fun to be back in Adelaide, we spent the day organizing some things, and having hot chocolate at this awesome chocolate thing. We also checked out the botanical gardens, these where really nice. Back in Adelaide
09/12/11 00:18
It`s strange to be back.
The trip back to Adelaide on the Ghan was great, we had a nice stop in Katherine and in Alice Springs. Other than that the time on the train went really fast. Books and movies really help. The good thin about traveling with train is that it has given me time to look over pictures and think about my time in Australia. It`s strange to think about that I have been here almost 6 months now. So much has happened during this time. These 6 months have really been full of adventure and experiences. My thoughts also goes to back home, I think about everybody I miss back home, but time goes fast.
Now we have 3 nights in Adelaide before we are going down to Melbourne with the Overland (another train) this one takes only 10 hours though. I am really exited about Melbourne, it will be a interesting city to see. It´s called the cultural capital of Australia so we hope to see a play or something.

06/12/11 13:11
It`s our last day in Darwin. Tomorrow we will board the Ghan again and go down to Adelaide. It´s a train journey sight from North to South dividing the continent. it will take us 50 hours on the train. Well I have several good books.
Today we went to the museum in Darwin, everybody had told us it was really good so we had to check it out and it`s free (a good extra bonus) In the evening we upheld the college tradition and had pizza and movie night. First we had pizza at dominos then we went to the cinema to watch Ideas of march.
The rest of the evening was spent packing and organizing everything for the train trip.
I have also finished the podcast for Adelaide and the train trips. Check it out

Today have been a great day and really exiting, we started the day by going to one of the big rivers/swamps in Darwin. Here we went in a boat and checked out the river, trying to find some big crocodiles (great die right? ) oh and before we did that we played with a huge python, like the day was not exiting enough already

Ok now I really want one as a pet, apparently they make good pets.
On the river we saw some huge crocodiles jumping for food, it was actually a little scary to being just half a meter from these deadly but fascinating creatures. They truly are some huge killing machines. It`s amazing that these have been around since the dinosaurs. To see them jump up their entire body length from the water, that`s really amazing.

Amazing right ?

It`s amazing to see something waging over 100kg jumping out of the water, with it`s full length. After some fun times at the river, we went for a hour drive to the Litchfield National Park which is a area bigger than the country Wales, that`s pretty cool! This park is really beautiful. We saw some interesting termite hills being over 50years old and huge. And I had my revenge on the green “fire ants” that have been biting me, I learned today that you can eat them and that they taste like lime (and eat them i did) I also tasted the termites which taste something like black pepper.

Now that`s one big termite hill!
After some interesting looks at the termite hill we went to take a swim in some of the beautiful lagoons in the park. The waterfalls and swimming “pool” here where really worth the whole trip.

it was really good to finally find a place where we cold swim where that water actually had a normal temperature and you don’t feel like you are being boiled. This was so relaxing and refreshing.

And I almost ran straight into this fun little spider, apparently that would really hurt!

You don’t want to be bitten by this one!
